Who's the Boss?

Jason's mom spent this past weekend with us. Before she left we were all sitting around the counter. We told Avery that Grandma would be leaving soon and we were talking about how we would miss her. June was sitting on Grandma Campbell's lap. Suddenly Avery got a worried look on her face. She turned to Kathy and said, "Grandma, you can't take June!" Then, after a pause, "Cause she's part of our falimy!"

It surprised me to see that Avery was so attached. After all, she usually acts as if June is a nuisance that she'd be glad to be rid of.



As I thought it over it occurred to me why it would be so important to Avery that June stay here. June is the only one in this house smaller than Avery and is, therefore, the only one that she can boss around. Avery and I are constantly going back and forth over who's the boss. When she tells me she's the boss I ask her, "Who says?" Her reply, without fail, is always, "Junie!"
