I had a voicemail as I was leaving work the other day asking me to call the boys’ school. I figured maybe one of them was sick and needed me to pick him up?
Quite the contrary. The school said they did not want me to pick Bryce up. They were just calling to let me know that he was being punished in in-school suspension for hacking into his classmates’ computers. They were confiscating his chromebook and it would be under district evaluation to determine where all he’d been on it.
Um, really? He’s in 3rd grade. Pretty sure he doesn’t have a clue how to hack into a computer! But what could I say?
When Bryce got home he briefed me on the extent of his crimes. His friends had given him their login info. Then he got onto their accounts and changed their profile pictures and backgrounds. That’s it. Also, he wasn’t the only one doing it. He was just one of three who got caught by their long-term substitute. I bet those kids have all been doing this forever and their teacher didn’t care. Just took one sub who needed to exert her dominance. Oh well.
So Bryce served his time. The first day he was with his accomplices, but the second he was by himself cause we started Spring Break early and missed the second day he was supposed to be in suspension.
He was dreading suspension by himself! Sitting outside the principal’s office, no recess, a stack of work, no lunch in the cafeteria. So Jason made him a deal to help relieve some anxiety. If Bryce would sit there and sing, “99 Bottles of Pop on the Wall” from 99 all the way down to zero, out loud, Jason would take him to A&W when he got home. Bryce said he did it, and that’s all it took for Jason to reward him.
The funny thing is, when we all got back from Spring Break, every student in the district opened their chromebooks and their self-selected backgrounds were gone! Gasp! Instead what they saw was the school district’s logo. Coincidence? Possibly. But the timing! The timing!
June and her friends were all aggast when this happened. She told them, “This is because of my brother!!!” Ugh! Little brothers. They’re kinda the worst.
And P.S. Bryce didn’t get his chromebook back for a week and a half, which only ticked Jason off further about the whole situation!
